Vermont Child, Dependent Care, EITC, Property Tax, and Renter Credits
Vermont tax relief pathways that may apply to caregiver households, including the refundable Vermont Child Tax Credit, Child and Dependent Care Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit, Property Tax Credit for eligible homeowners, and Renter Credit for eligible renters.
What it offers
Vermont offers multiple refundable tax credits relevant to caregiver households. The Vermont Child Tax Credit provides up to $1,000 per child age 5 or younger, with the full credit for filers with income under $125,000 and a partial credit up to $175,000. The Vermont Child and Dependent Care Credit equals 72% of the federal credit and is fully refundable. The Vermont Earned Income Tax Credit equals 38% of the federal EITC and is fully refundable. Vermont also offers a Property Tax Credit for eligible homeowners whose property qualifies as a homestead and who meet household-income and filing requirements, with maximum components of $5,600 for education property tax and $2,400 for municipal property tax for the 2025 claim. Vermont's Renter Credit is a refundable credit for eligible residents who rented in Vermont for at least six months, meet income eligibility, and are not claimed as another taxpayer's dependent.
Questions that decide eligibility
GiveCare prepares the questions; the program makes the decision. Bring these to the call or the application:
- 01
Does the person receiving care live in Vermont?
Residency is usually the first thing a program checks.
- 02
Does the VA disability rating meet the program’s minimum (our record lists null%)?
- 03
Do the work hours meet the minimum (our record lists null hours)?
- 04
Which tax year does this apply to, and what form claims it?
- 05
Does your employer already offer this, and have they told staff?
Some credits are claimed by the employer, not by you — asking is the move.
