VA Community Adult Day Health Care (ADHC)

VA-funded daytime supervised health and social program for veterans, functioning as recurring daytime respite for family caregivers. The Dole Act Section 120 (P.L. 118-210) raised the VA HCBS spending cap to 100% of nursing-home cost equivalent, substantially increasing available ADHC hours. A February 2026 Federal Register rule enables state-home medical-model ADHC agreements.

What it offers

Adult Day Health Care is a VA Home and Community Based Services program Veterans can attend during the day for social activities, peer support, companionship, recreation, and available health services from nurses, therapists, social workers, and others. VA says the program is for Veterans who need help with activities of daily living, are isolated, or whose caregiver is experiencing burden. ADHC can provide respite care for a family caregiver and help the Veteran and caregiver gain skills to manage care at home. It may be provided at VA medical centers, State Veterans Homes, or community organizations. All enrolled Veterans are eligible if they are eligible for community care, meet clinical criteria, and the service is available; a copay may be charged based on service-connected disability status and financial information.

Questions that decide eligibility

GiveCare prepares the questions; the program makes the decision. Bring these to the call or the application:

  1. 01

Does the veteran’s service history and discharge status fit this program’s rules?

  2. 02

Does the VA disability rating meet the program’s minimum (our record lists null%)?

  3. 03

Do the work hours meet the minimum (our record lists null hours)?

  4. 04

Is there a caregiver-specific department, coordinator, or support line? Ask for it by name.

Many agencies have one that isn’t advertised on the website.

  5. 05

What documents do you need from us to start an application?

  6. 06

Is there a waitlist right now, and how long is it?
