Texas ADRC, Area Agencies on Aging, and 2-1-1 Resource Navigation
Texas caregivers can use Texas Health and Human Services Aging and Disability Resource Centers, Area Agencies on Aging, Take Time Texas, and 2-1-1 Texas to find local aging, disability, caregiver, respite, long-term services and supports, home care, Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, TANF, WIC, housing, food, health care, transportation, mental health, veteran, and community-service referrals.
What it offers
Texas Health and Human Services provides a services-location search for offices that help with aging, disability, behavioral health, intellectual or developmental disability services, and says people unsure how HHS can help can call 855-937-2372 to talk to a trained professional. The locator lists Texas Area Agencies on Aging and Aging and Disability Resource Centers by county and service type. Texas Family Resources says people caring for an aging adult or person with a disability can receive support through programs in Texas; Area Agencies on Aging help people age 60 and older and can help caregivers and family members find information and access community services; Aging and Disability Resource Centers help caregivers find long-term services and supports, refer to long-term care providers, and simplify applying for funding. HHSC says ADRC core services include specialized information, referral, and assistance, referrals to respite care, local contact agency transition assistance, housing navigation, and Medicare-related outreach. 2-1-1 Texas is an HHSC program that connects Texans by phone, internet, and chat to state and local health and human services programs, including food, housing, child care, crisis counseling, substance use treatment, and emergency services.
Questions that decide eligibility
GiveCare prepares the questions; the program makes the decision. Bring these to the call or the application:
- 01
Does the person receiving care live in Texas?
Residency is usually the first thing a program checks.
- 02
Does your relationship to the person — spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, other relative, or non relative — count for this program?
- 03
Does the VA disability rating meet the program’s minimum (our record lists null%)?
- 04
Do the work hours meet the minimum (our record lists null hours)?
- 05
Is there a caregiver-specific department, coordinator, or support line? Ask for it by name.
Many agencies have one that isn’t advertised on the website.
- 06
What documents do you need from us to start an application?
- 07
Is there a waitlist right now, and how long is it?
